Wood floor refinishing in one day!

Experts refer to this one day refinishing as screen and recoat and it’s the best kept secret in the hardwood flooring industry. But it shouldn’t be because it can save you time and money over the life of your floor. A screen and recoat is a part of the regular maintenance for hardwood floors that have been finished with polyurethane. It is important to screen your floors at least once every other year in order to avoid needing full sanding. We remove the old polyurethane coating with a screen, just like a floor sander but using a screen. We remove all residue from the floors to make sure they are thoroughly cleaned before the recoating process. We then would apply two new polyurethane coatings to get a nice, smooth finish.

This wood floor refinishing is not recommended for floors...

  • that have been finished with waxes (including acrylic products such as Mop & Glo), or maintained with silicon cleaners or oil soaps.
  • with hard finishes like aluminum oxide.
  • that are engineered floors, laminate floors, or vinyl floors.

If you have any questions about your hardwood floors, we'd love to help. Call, 919-336-1562 for a free assessment and quote. We may be able to save your investment with a screen and recoat and you could avoid expensive sanding repairs or wood floor installation costs.

Hardwood Floor Wax Removal

Hardwood floor protection is a great way to keep your hardwood floors protected from moisture and damage. Protectors should be applied regularly; unfortunately, store-bought wax products can cause build-up and leave your floors looking dull and murky after a short time. Wax removal can be time-consuming and labor-intensive. Save yourself the trouble and allow the trained professionals at Grades Hardwoods to handle all of your hardwood wax removal needs.

Once the area has been prepared, we use a three-step wax removal process on your hardwood floors.

  1. Clean
  2. Rinse
  3. Polish

Our machine’s rotary brush and self-contained extraction system removes dirt and grime – without making a mess! The cleaning process is then repeated with a neutralizer to restore the pH of the wood, as well as remove any contaminants left on the floor. Finally, an application of a satin or gloss coating restores the shine and beauty to your floors. When you have us remove wax from your hardwood floors your hardwoods will look like new!

We are a locally owned and operated small business and have been serving Cary, North Carolina and the greater Triangle for more than 4 years. The owner, Uli Gradinger, is certified through Basic Coatings Wood Refinishing classes.

  • How often should I screen and recoat my hardwood floors?

Once you start seeing signs of wear and tear in these areas, start thinking about adding another coat of finish for more protection. A general time frame is every 3-5 years or so, depending on how much traffic your floor sees.

  • How long do I have to stay off my hardwoods after refinishing?

We recommend waiting 6 hours before walking on your new floors in socks. After 24 hours you can walk through with shoes on. Allow 48 hours before setting furniture and returning pets.

  • When can I put a rug down on refinished wood floors?

The first two weeks after finishing, the finish is still curing. So, for two weeks, don't cover the floor(s) with rugs, or anything else (such as cardboard boxes during a move).

  • How do I air out my house after floor refinishing?

Crack open a window. Getting rid of any smell starts with good ventilation. Open windows promote the free flow of fresh air throughout the area that has been worked on. The longer there is cross ventilation, the less bothersome the smell of polyurethane fumes will be.
